Security assessment is a crucial task to obtain an efficient planning and operation of power systems. Therefore, having the skills to perform this task is of major importance for power system engineers.
2- SPECIFIC AIMS
Be able to understand and model the time domain behavior (i.e., dynamic behavior) of power systems. Understand the different dynamic phenomena that can appear in a power system, resulting from disturbances, which may lead to loss of system security. Be familiarized with the tools and methodologies that can be used to study and solve these problems.
1- Be able to understand the different dynamic phenomena that can appear in a power system, resulting from disturbances, which may lead to loss of system security.
2- Be able to master the modeling of a multi-machine system, comprising the network, loads, synchronous generators with their excitation systems and frequency regulation systems, suitable for time domain analysis studies.
3- Be capable to use dynamic simulation software proper for the transient and dynamic analysis of power systems.
4- Understand the operation and management of primary, secondary and tertiary load-frequency control systems in interconnected power systems.
5- Identify the nature of power system oscillations and characterize such oscillations using modal analysis.
6- Be familiar with the tuning procedures of power system stabilizers, aiming to increase the damping of critical electromechanical modes of oscillation in power systems.
7- Be aware of the methodologies used to apply automatic learning techniques in the development of on-line dynamic security assessment tools for power systems.
Fundamental courses about operation and analysis of power systems.
1) POWER SYSTEM DYNAMIC SECURITY ASSESSMENT - Understand: Why and when dynamic security assessment is performed in power systems; The different types of dynamic problems that can appear in power systems and, in particular, when a high renewable power production is being used; The tools and methodologies that can be used to study and solve these problems.
2) POWER SYSTEM DYNAMIC MODEL – Description of the models usually used to perform time domain analysis of power systems that include synchronous generators with excitation system and load-frequency regulation systems.
3) LOAD-FREQUENCY CONTROL SYSTEM - Description of the control behavior and management of primary, secondary and tertiary load-frequency control systems in large interconnected power systems.
4) SMALL-SIGNAL STABILITY IN POWER SYSTEMS - Analysis of power system oscillations due to the lack of damping torque in synchronous generators (electrotechnical oscillation modes). Study of these phenomena, using linearized models of the power system around an operating point and eigenvalue-based methods (modal analysis). Design of power system stabilizers (PSS) by using modal analysis for improving the damping of electrotechnical oscillation modes.
5) AUTOMATIC LEARNING TECHNIQUES FOR DYNAMIC SECURITY ASSESSMENT – General methodology for applying automatic learning techniques to provide real-time dynamic security assessment of power systems. Application examples specifically designed for power systems with high penetration of renewable power production will be analyzed.
Theoretical classes are based on oral presentation, supported by a board and data show. Theoretical-practical classes take place in the computer laboratory. In these classes, students must do an assignment, supported by the teacher supervision. The assignment aims the dynamic analysis of a fictitious power system, with typical characteristics, by using a dynamic simulation software tool provided by the teacher.

Assignment aiming the dynamic analysis of a fictitious power system, with typical characteristics, by using a dynamic simulation software tool provided by the teacher.
Students with a special status also have to do the assignment and to deliver it at the same time as for ordinary students. The assignment is the same for all students. A minimum grade of 40% must be obtained in the assignment before performing the exam.
Only possible for the final exam.
