Objectives

Students should be able to: Understand and explain the reliability issues of the composite generation-transmission system and cover the main evaluation techniques (CDIO 1.3, 1.4, 2.1, 2.3). Apply simulation methodologies to these problems (CDIO 2.1, 2.4, 2.5, 3.2, 3.3). Know and apply methodologies for planning, namely in an uncertainty environment (CDIO 2.5, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.6). Analyze the impact of the structural modifications of the electric sector in the planning activity (CDIO 2.5, 4.1, 4.2).

Learning outcomes and competences

Program

Reliability of the generating system. Deterministic and probabilistic criteria for the evaluation of reserves. Risk. Definition of expansion strategies taking in account risk and investment.

Reliability of the composite generation-transmission system. Analytic methods and simulation. Monte Carlo: theory. Acceleration of convergence: contrl variables and importance sampling. Confidence intervals and convergence. Systems with hydro component. Systems with high penetration of wind power.

Reliability assessment by meta-heurístics, competing against Monte Carlo.

Planning of transmission and distribution systems. Optimization based models. Basic Garver model. Optimization with meta-heuristics. Planning in transmission systems with a high penetration of renewables.

Reactive power planning: operation and investment.
