Objectives
After approval in this study unit, the students should be able to:
- know and understand the key concepts in operations management, being able to solve real world problems, both in industrial and service companies;
- acquire an integrated vision of operations management in organizations, namely in what concerns concepts, techniques and strategies, as well as be able to identify and tackle problems using quantitative methods;
- understand the need and role of forecasting methods, inventory management, production planning, and operations scheduling in production systems and supply chains;
- know and apply lean manufacturing concepts and tools, with the aim of reducing waste and increase the efficiency of production systems.
Learning outcomes and competences
The competences to be acquired and developed by the students, as well as the learning outcomes, result directly from the achievement of the objectives pointed above. Therefore, the aim of this course is to provide students with the following competences:
- identify and understand the different competitive priorities of operations management;
- understand the role of operations strategy in the competitiveness of an organization;
- understand and explain the main activities and concepts in the operations management;
- design and analyse production systems using quantitative methods;
- know and apply forecasting and inventory management methods;
- explain and apply the main approaches, methods, and tools for performing production planning: aggregate production planning; capacity management; material requirements planning; lot-sizing and economic order quantity; operations scheduling and control;
- know and use the fundamental concepts in supply chain management;
- understand and use the lean manufacturing concepts and tools.

Eligibility for exams
According to general evaluation norms, article 4º.
Calculation formula of final grade
EF (final exam) - 0 to 20 grading scale (minimum grade of 8 points)
TP (group assignment) - 0 to 20 grading scale (minimum grade of 8 points)
CF (final grade, before rounding):
CF = 0.70EF + 0.30TP
Classification improvement
In order to improve the final grade, only the classification obtained in the written exam can be improved in a recourse exam.
Observations
Students who apply for a final exam for completion of the course will be required to complete a practical assignment to be defined case-by-case.
