Objectives

Develop the necessary skills to carry out realistic projects of LV Distribution Networks.

Learning outcomes and competences

• To adopt a systematic approach to problems based on general technical and scientific knowledge. [CDIO
Skills 1.3, 2.1, 2.3, 4.3, 4.4]
• To understand the Portuguese technical rules applicable to the design of LV and MV Distribution
Networks. [CDIO Skills 1.3, 2.2]
• To develop technical skills, useful for the future career of the students, in the activity of conception and
design of LV distribution networks.[CDIO Skills 2.1, 2.3, 2.5, 3.3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4]
• Efficient integration on teamwork. [CDIO Skills 3.1]
• Work with AutoCAD, as an essential computer tool for preparing the drawings. [CDIO Skills 3.2]
• To Know the electrical equipment (Functions, Features, ranges) and materials used in LV and MV
distribution networks. [CDIO Skills 1.3]

Teaching methods and learning activities

THEORETICAL CLASSES:
•In general, using of Power Point presentations. But, where appropriate, illustration with actual case
studies / examples; Lectures on more specific topics can be given by some invited experts.

PRACTICAL CLASSES:
•Autonomous elaboration of the project by the students, but with close orientation and scheduling of the
various phases of the project, by the teacher. For this purpose, working groups (three or four students) are
created. At the end, each group may be asked, to explain and justify the options / decisions taken, as well
as to demonstrate the effective participation of all group members in the activities.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Exame 30,00
Trabalho prático ou de projeto 70,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Elaboração de projeto 86,00
Estudo autónomo 24,00
Frequência das aulas 52,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

Two conditions: 1- Not to exceed the absence limit established to the practical classes. 2- Grade obtained on the group assignment, with a minimum of 40%.

Calculation formula of final grade

CLASSIFICATION = 0.70 x (Grade obtained on the group assignment) + 0,30 x (result of the Exam)

Examinations or Special Assignments

Exam focusing on the material taught in the lectures and general aspects of the project.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Identical to the evaluation procedure established to the ordinary students.

Classification improvement

•The students can only improve only the result of the exam. The Grade obtained on the group assignment can be improved attendindg the course again.

It is applied the general formula to calculate the final grade.

Observations

• Copies of the slides of lectures that are provided to students, cover most of the material taught.

It is planned to visit the MV/LV Substation of FEUP.
It is planned a practice session especially dedicated to the accomplishment of works and demonstrations.
