Objectives

This curricular unit aims to give the students the opportunity to develop and integrate a complex system in an environment that closely resembles what they will find in real-life business. The system must comply with the engineering requirements that are extracted from the end user functional requirements for the application.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of this unit the the following learning outcomes are expected:
• development of skills that enable establishing engineering requirements and specifications from the desired functional description
• perform a market survey of products that meet the functional description and look for innovations that may differentiate the proposed solution
• teamwork participation
• auto-evaluation as a member of a tem.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Fundaments and conceptual approach to Systems Engineering;
Analysis, structuring and, specification of requirements;
Engineering process: References; System concept; SBS; Functional analysis, design;
Project quality. Risk analysis and management: identification, occurrences and impact;
Elaboration of project proposals. Evaluation and selection of proposal.

Mandatory literature

.; IEEE Standards; IEEE Standard for Application and Management of the Systems Engineering Process IEEE Standards, 1998, 1998

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures to teach program themes. The laboratorial classes are dedicated to work out a complex project elaborated by a large team. The classes allow the teacher to enter in the teamwork supporting the development of the different learning components during the semester.
The global and weekly documentation of the project is published in a web repositorium, dated and indexed to its version.

Eligibility for exams

Actively participate in the planning and development of the projects.

Calculation formula of final grade

Type of evaluation: Avaliação distribuída sem exame final

The evaluation is based on the following criteria:
A - Selection of technology based on:
a) quality of evaluation of state of art;
b)Selected technologies for application;
c) innovation level faced to systems in the market.
B - Global performance of carried out results:
a)Evaluation of project performance;
b)Quality of documentation.
C - Quality of presentation, considering presentation itself as well as technical reports
D - Development Process
a) team organization
b) work planning and control
c) documentation quality

Formula Evaluation: 60% Team work; 40% Individual Evaluation

Examinations or Special Assignments

Project development (multi-disciplinary and camplex) within a team.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Similar to common students.

Classification improvement

Due to the learning methodology, no mechanism for grade improvement is defined.

Observations

- Approval in both evaluation components is required (individual and team work).
- Due to the learning methodology there are no special exams in this course.
