Objectives

This course unit (UC) aims to respond to changes in the chemical industry, by developing competence in the area of Product Engineering.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students sould acquire technical knowledge about the Chemical Product Design (DPQ) and about the various steps necessary to reach the production phase, including the ability to identify and classify consumer needs, develop product ideas, apply criteria of selection of ideas ,and outline manufacturing processes.
Are also objectives of this UC to pursuit the creation of new products for the chemical industry based on national raw materials.
It is also intended that students develop personal and interpersonal skills in terms of critical thinking, communication and teamworking.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures and tutorial sessions. In each chapter of the program, the different types of chemicals and the respective specificities of the DPQ are presented and illustrated with real examples.
Tutorial classes based on DPQ projects developed by groups of students. The products to be developed by the students are formulated products, with active ingredients extracted from national raw materials. Each group develops a project for an active ingredient, having to develop a product based on this ingredient, identify raw material availability, extraction and purification methods, manufacturing process, commercial strategy and financial evaluation.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Defesa pública de dissertação, de relatório de projeto ou estágio, ou de tese 50,00
Participação presencial 50,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Apresentação/discussão de um trabalho científico 4,00
Elaboração de projeto 56,00
Elaboração de relatório/dissertação/tese 24,00

Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

According to General Evaluation Rules of FEUP.

Calculation formula of final grade

Distributed assessment without final exam, including an individual assessment component (CI) and a collective assessment (CC).

The CI will include the completion of individual questionnaires (QI), and individual performance assessment during classes (DI), in the intermediate presentation (AI) and in the final presentation of the project (AF) and will be obtained by the formula: CI = 0.20 QI + 0.15 DI + 0.15 AI + 0.50 AF.

The CC corresponds to the classification of the final report.

The final classification (CF) will be obtained by the formula: CF = 0.50 CI + 0.50 CC

Examinations or Special Assignments

Not applicable.

Classification improvement

For individual grade improvement the student can submit a revised version of the project report.
