Objectives

This course aims to introduce the student to the fundamental concepts of electromagnetic radiation, which are necessary for understanding how antennae function. Covered will be the basic principles of antennae, their most important characteristics, with a particular emphasis of filiform antennae and of the grouping of antennae (arrays).
In the final part of the semester will be covered the  wave propagation, in free space, between antennae. 
During the semester usage will be made of antenna simulation software. Additionally, antennae signal measurements will be taken in an anechoic chamber.

Learning outcomes and competences

As learning outcomes of this curricular unit, it is expected that the student will have the technical knowledge necessary to develop, measure and simulate antennae. It is also expected that the student will understand the relevance and integration of these devices in communication systems.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Basic knowledge of Mathematics and Physics (Electromagnetics), normally already acquired by students attending the 4th year of the MIEEC Program.

Program

Introduction to the basic theory of radiation and antennae; fundamental parameters of antennae; filiform antennae: their relationship with the infinitesimal dipole; half wavelength dipoles; the Earth effect over the fundamental antenna characteristics; ring antennae; group of antennae and their properties: analysis and synthesis of radiation diagrams, including the Fourier method.
Aperture antennae: radiation equations and design; the most important types of aperture antennae and reflector antennae. Wave propagation in free space between antennae.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical sessions: presentation of the course topics including the resolution of illustrative examples.
Practical sessions: exercise resolution, simulation and design of antennae by software; antenna signal measurements made in an anechoic chamber

Eligibility for exams

Students have to reach a minimum grade of 7 out of 20 in the continuous assessment component, made during the semester.

Calculation formula of final grade

Continuous Assessment: 40% of the final grade.
Exam: 60% of the final grade.
In the exam students have to reach a minimum grade of 7 out of 20, in order to complete the course.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Students with a special status have to complete the continuous assessment component with a minimum grade of 7 out of 20. Students may ask for permission to use the laboratory, if necessary.

Classification improvement

If students opt for a 2nd exam, to improve their previously obtained satisfactory overall grade, the new overall grade calculation will not include the continuous assessment component. [Effectively, the 2nd optional exam will be on a 0 to 20 scale, instead of the 0 to 12 scale for the 1st mandatory exam.]

Observations

Exams at the end of the semester will take place at FEUP. Due to the pandemic situation, exams may be replaced by videoconference oral examinations only in the case of justified impediments.

Exams which take place during the special season may include an oral component.
