Objectives

Specific aims:
Learning the main experimental methods and techniques used in the analysis and monitoring the behaviour of structures and components. Learn new concepts about in-service structural monitoring such as: self monitoring, smart structures; self healing structures, tailored components.

At the end of the semester,
Students should be acquainted with the main procedures, which are necessary to measure structures and interpret results.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students should know the main techniques of experimental mechanics and learn how they can apply them in solving problems of evaluation of structures and components.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Solid mechanics, statics and instrumentation

Program

Brief revision of the characteristic of state of stress at a point; displacement and deformation fields; Hooke’s law and deformation matrix; Obtaining a stress matrix.
Classic techniques of obtaining stress at a point; mechanical and electrical extensometry; Geometrical Moiré techniques varnish method.
Introduction to the study of light; Light sources, continuous/pulsed emission, polarization, bandwidth, spatial/temporal coherence; Measurement of stress/deformation with photo elasticity; Coherent radiation and speckle generation; Holographic register and holographic interferometry; Techniques of image processing applied to experimental mechanics.

Instrumentation: transducers and measurement systems; Acquisition system and data processing at one, two and three dimensions; Telemetry systems and data storage systems; image techniques applied to the structure behaviour.

The study of the techniques presented will be complemented by the presentation and discussion of different applications at LOME (Laboratory of Optics and Experimental Mechanics) of DEMEGI/INEGI.

Students will have the chance to do group assignments about the application of techniques.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Defesa pública de dissertação, de relatório de projeto ou estágio, ou de tese 10,00
Trabalho laboratorial 90,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 60,00
Trabalho laboratorial 100,00
Total: 160,00

Eligibility for exams

Registration + attendance to classes >75% of theoretical-practical classes + final test + practical assignment

Calculation formula of final grade

Final Exam = (55% of the final grade)
Practical assignment = (45% of the final grade)

Comment: the assessment of the practical assignment will cover the report, results and presentation.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Students are assigned to subjects for practical works and each student is expected to produce a written report on the tasks performed. The report should be in the form of a scientific paper and students should be encouraged to publish it in a scientific journal or conference.

The performance of the work is mandatory.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

In accordance with the evaluation rules of FEUP.

Classification improvement

In accordance with the evaluation rules of FEUP. The grade of the work will remain, unless the student proposes and carries out a new work.

Observations

Students should have completed the following course units: Mechanics I, Mechanics II and Solid Mechanics.
