The course unit aims to endow students with supplementary training in the domains of Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering and other technical-professional areas, in order to prepare them to work in a company which produce, transform and/or commercialise polymers or polymer conatining materials.
Students should acquire advanced knowledge in production, transformation and application of the main synthetic and artificial polymers and materials that contain them. A special emphasis is given to the assessment of enterprise and the societal context of production methods, in particular about the economic and environmental sustainability. Students should also acquire skills in bibliography research, technical English (as most of the supporting material is in English), as well as oral and written communication skills by given presentations and writing small scientific papers.
Introduction and Definitions: Classification of Polymers; Morphology and Thermal Transitions; Nomenclature; Applications.
Synthesis of Polymeric Materials: Polymerization Mechanisms (Addition, Step Growth, Advanced Methods); Polymerization Processes (Homogeneous Phase, Heterogeneous Phase).Chemical Characterization of Polymeric Materials: Identification of Molecular Structure; Molecular weights and their Distribution.
Properties of polymers in solid state: Amorphous and Crystalline states, Thermal Transitions, Experimental Characterization Methods.
Industrial Applications: Thermoplastics, Elastomers and Thermosets; Adhesives and Paints; Composites; Biomedical Applications; Polymers from Natural Sources.
Theoretical-practical classes are based on the presentation and discussion of the themes of the course unit. The remaining classes will be based on laboratory demonstrations (synthesi and characterization of polymers) and/or study visits.
