Program

1- Kinetics of chemical reactions
Classification of chemical reactions; Revision of fundamental notions of chemical kinetics and reaction mechanisms; chemical processes and catalysis: homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis

2- Heterogeneous catalysis
Definition of basic concepts; Activity, selectivity and stability of catalysts;
General mechanism of catalytic reactions; chemical adsorption and Langmuir equation; Kinetics and reaction mechanism of heterogeneous catalysis;
Types of catalysts: metals, nonstoichiometric oxides and acids.
Catalysts components: supports, active phases and promoters
Supported catalysts: characteristics of the metallic phase.
Reaction and diffusion in catalysts. External and internal diffusion limitations. Diffusivities in porous media. Effectiveness factor and Thiele modulus. Weisz and Prater criterion.

3- Introduction to Chemical Reactors: Ideal Reactors
Characteristics of chemical reactors; material balance equation; ideal models: batch, plug flow and continuous stirred tank reactor.
Analysis of experimental data to determine reaction kinetics.
Reactor design. Reactor associations.

Teaching methods and learning activities

This course is divided into general theoretical classes (3 hours per week) and theoretical-practical classes (1 hour per week). In the first type, concepts and examples are presented, while the second are oriented to problem solving.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Exame 75,00
Participação presencial 0,00
Teste 25,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Eligibility for exams

Students have to attend 8 micro-tests; they are not scheduled and will last around 15 minutes.
Students have to attend classes and the micro-tests.

Calculation formula of final grade

Students’ assessment will be based on the following formula:
C = 0,25 Ca + 0,75 E
Ca- continuous assessment (average of the micro-tests; the 3 worst results will not be taken into account)
E- Exam

A minimum value of 7.5 is required for E.

Examinations or Special Assignments

A closed book exam, which is divided into two parts. Students cannot use calculators at least in the first part of the exam.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students with a special status (e.g. working students) and students who attended to the course last year, do not need to attend to theoretical-practical classes.
