Objectives

After approval in this course unit, the students should be able to: 1. Perform a sound and thorough needs screening process, by: developing need statements, analyzing disease state, developing a landscape of available treatment options, analyzing the multiple stakeholders touched by a need, performing market analysis, and filtering needs. 2. Generate appropriate solution concepts, by: developing creative solutions to a defined need, and choosing solution concepts to pursue. 3. Plan and create a development strategy, by: developing the initial steps required to obtain a patent, creating an intellectual property strategy, creating a regulatory strategy. 4. Integrate plans and strategies into a unified business vision, by developing a business plan.

Learning outcomes and competences

The student will participate in lectures with practitioners, and will be participating in teams that will develop projects with technology/problem(s) combinations. The teaching-learning process will be focused on the student (autonomous and mentored work), who will be monitored for evolution and knowledge acquisition as well as professional competence development, with a focus on the development of enabling competences, specialized and specific, for a competent professional activity, for social participation and for research at the student’s transition to the labor market.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course has a lecture component and a project component: - The lecture component consists of a 3-hour weekly session, and is taught through a combination of “practicals” and lectures from visiting medical device field experts. “Practicals” are didactic lectures intended to be interactive and problem based. - The project component comprises a hands-on 1-hour weekly section, consisting of mentoring and/or coaching sessions with faculty and mentors. The course unit is taught by a combination of University of Porto (UP) faculty, medical device entrepreneurs, corporate executives, intellectual property attorneys, and venture capitalists. The course faculty run the coaching sessions and the mentoring sessions, meeting weekly with the team and providing feedback and guidance on the specific team project. As such, the course provides a unique opportunity to gain real world experience while still in an academic environment.

The project will generate the following deliverables: • Deliverable #1: Oral Presentation and Needs PowerPoint • Deliverable #2: Oral Presentation and Concepts PowerPoint • Deliverable #3: Oral Presentation and Final PowerPoint • Deliverable #4: Final Project document: Lessons learned. The quality of the assignments and the participation in class, coaching sessions, and teamwork evolution will be assessed by the faculty. The team members assessments will contribute to the grade in the teamwork component.
