The main objective of this CU is to provide students with the fundamental concepts of material selection. The seven topics of the programmatic content constitute a natural sequence of presentation of the concepts.
Chapter 1 will give the student a historical overview of the evolution of material use.
Chapter 2 will allow the student to know the concept and alternate types of design. Get to know the design tools.
Chapter 3 will allow the student to know the material databases.
Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7 will allow the student to interpret tables and material property charts, establish the functional requirements of a component to select materials according to their application, select materials according to the manufacturing process selected, the design of the component to the manufacturing process and finally establish the relationship between the function of the component, the material, the geometry of the component and the processing.1 Introduction: Materials in Design. The evolution of engineering materials and in products
2 The design process. Types of Design. Design tools. Function, material, form and process
3 Engineering materials and their properties. The Families of Engineering Materials. Material properties and their units. Material Property Maps
4 Material selection - the basics. The Selection Strategy. Indices of Merit of Materials. The Selection Procedure. Computer-aided selection. Selection of material taking into consideration the shape. Form Factors. Material indices that include form
5 Processes and Process Selection. Compatibility between material and manufacturing processes. Cost modeling: material, capital, time, energy and information
6 Materials and the environment. Life cycle of a material. Classes of products according to the energy expended in the production of materials, manufacturing processes, use and recycling. Eco-attributes: production, processing, end of life
7 Case-study
Theoretical concepts will be presented in the theoretical classes. In these classes, simple case studies will also be proposed to consolidate the concepts presented. Part of these theoretical classes will be aimed at theoretical presentations made by students.
Theoretical-practical classes will be dedicated to the discussion of the case studies proposed in the theoretical classes and also to the monitoring of the two works that the students will carry out for evaluation throughout the semester. These two group works have different degrees of difficulty. The first will serve to consolidate the basic concepts, the second will be an integrative work of all the concepts associated with the selection of materials. This second work will be the subject of an oral presentation.

Article 4 of the General Evaluation Standards
Calculation formula of the final classification:
CF = A * 0.3 + B * 0.4 + C * 0.2 + D * 0.2 + D * 0.1
CF - Final classification
A- Classification of the exam
B- Classification of group work (report + presentation)
C- Classification of theoretical presentation
D- Average of the ratings of the formative questionnaires performed in the theoretical classes.
Examination on all subjects and activities carried out within the scope of the discipline. Realization, presentation and defense of a work on a subject addressed in the discipline (2 weeks of delivery time) CF = A * 0.6 + B * 0.4 CF- Final classification A- Exam classification B- Classification of the work
