Objectives

The main objective of this course is to enable students to acquire practical skills and learn laboratory techniques relevant to the further development of the dissertation.

Learning outcomes and competences

Besides the acquisition of theoretical knowledge about the selected techniques, students should acquire skills in the practical application of these techniques.

Working method

À distância

Program

The syllabus is different for each student as they rely on techniques that every student will learn and develop. The set of techniques is suggested by the supervisor of the dissertation that the student will perform in the 2nd year of the curriculum and should be tailored to the specific needs of the dissertation topic.

Mandatory literature

Autores diversos; .

Comments from the literature

The bibliography is dependent on the set of laboratory techniques to be developed by each student.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Autonomous work mainly consisting of a study on the subject of the chosen laboratory techniques and the development of work of experimental nature. The work will be supervised by one of the course instructors and and accompanied by the advisor of the student's dissertation.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Estudo autónomo 80,00
Trabalho laboratorial 42,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

Requirements for frequency: Preparation of a final report describing the work performed, including the theoretical basis of the techniques studied and the results of its practical application.

Calculation formula of final grade

To obtain approval, the student must make an oral presentation of the work, followed by public discussion.

The final grade awarded to the student to be decided by a jury consisting of the course instructors (70%) and the dissertation advisor (30%).

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Similar to the ordinary students.

Classification improvement

Not applicable.

Observations

If it is impossible to perform laboratory work in person, due to the Covid19 pandemic, the student may alternatively perform experimental work in remote mode, using computer and simulation tools in software and simulated data or available in remote databases. If these remote resources do not exist or are not applicable to the work theme, the laboratory evaluation component will be distributed proportionally on the other two evaluation components.
