M1 - "LABORATÓRIOS DE QUÍMICA-FÍSICA" Physical Chemistry is a very important subject dealing with the physical principles underlying the properties of chemical substances. The aim of "Laboratórios de Química-Física" is to place the theoretical abstract concepts into an experimental context. Some of the goals of this subject matter are to: (a) expose students to rigorous experimental methods which emphasize the classical physical chemistry concepts; (b) help students to develop important experimental skills; (c) train students to observe experiments, keep records of the observations made and analyse the data critically; (d) teach students to present experimental results and write reports clearly, concisely and consistently. M2 - DRAWING OVERVIEW AND INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION Specific aims: Introduction of the concept of Standardization in general and of its importance in Engineering. Acquisition of basic knowledge about the representation of the nominal shape and dimensions of objects. Development of spatial visualization and technical communication skills. Introduction to the concept of Geometrical product specification (GPS). Transmission of basic concepts about mechanical systems and components for general use. Introduction to diagrammatic drawings.
M1 - EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY Learning outcomes: At the end of the coursethe students should be able to: 1) Interpret and understand the chemical and physical phenomena of matter based on experiments conducted in the laboratory. 2) perform rigorous experimental work. 3) Prepare scientific and technical reports. 3) Present orally and succinctly the results of experimental work. 4) Search for scientific articles.
M2 - DRAWING OVERVIEW AND INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION Learning outcomes: At the end of the course, the students should be able to: 1) Make drawings of objects in orthographic representation and with nominal dimensioning. 2) Read drawings of objects in orthographic representation and make the correspondent pictorial representations (isometric drawings). 3) Interpret the meaning of different tolerancings inscribed in drawings. 4) Identify different standardized mechanical components in some mechanical systems for general use; choose their characteristics; know their representation in assembly drawings and the elementary mechanical functions accomplished by them. 5) Read and make simplified representations of pipelines.
M1 - "LABORATÓRIOS DE QUÍMICA-FÍSICA" 1. PHASE EQUILIBRIA: construction of a ternary phase diagram. 2. CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM : chemical equilibrium in solution. 3. CHEMICAL KINETICS: the persulfate-iodide reaction. 4. THERMOCHEMISTRY : calorimetry. 5. MACROMOLECULES: Dilute solution viscosity. M2 - DRAWING OVERVIEW AND INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION 1 STANDARDIZATION in general and in technical drawings. 2 TECHNICAL PRODUCT DOCUMENTATION: scales, drawing media, ISO lettering and lines. Types of projection systems. Short references to the dihedric method. 3 ORTHOGRAPHIC REPRESENTATIONS: general principles of presentation for views, the choice of views, partial views, auxiliary views, cuts and sections. The reading of orthographic drawings. 4 INDICATION OF DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES: general principles; dimensioning of angles and slopes on prisms; dimensioning of conical tapers and taper angles; dimensioning of profiles; theory of nominal dimensioning and preferred numbers. 5 PICTORIAL REPRESENTATIONS: axonometric representations (isometric drawings). 6 GEOMETRICAL PRODUCT SPECIFICATION (GPS): The concept of GPS; fundamental tolerancing principle; dimensional and geometric tolerancing; general tolerances; indication of surface texture. 7 MECHANICAL SYSTEMS AND COMPONENTS FOR GENERAL USE: Types of elements; their representations in technical drawings and standardized designations; movable assemblies by threaded fasteners and permanent assemblies by welding. 8 Introduction to diagrammatic drawings: simplified representation of PIPELINES.
M1 - "LABORATÓRIOS DE QUÍMICA-FÍSICA" Each group of 3 or 4 students will conduct 5 experiments, according to a pre-established calendar. Students are expected to conduct the experiments with minimal assistance of the lab responsible. The experiments should be prepared before beginning the lab session. The experiment preparation and record keeping must be done in a dedicated laboratory notebook. At the end of each experiment a short report must be written and delivered to the lab responsible. However, all data must be safely recorded in the laboratory notebook. Formal reports for two selected experiments must be written, discussed with the lab responsible the next week and delivered in their final form one week later. Late reports will not be accepted. Each group will carry out a live presentation to the rest of the class about one of their experiments in weeks 5 and 13 M2 - DRAWING OVERVIEW AND INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION The theoretical-practical classes are based on a brief exposition of each topic of the course, illustrated by the presentation of examples of application and intercalated with the resolution, by the students, of exercises considered relevant and that can be found in the main bibliography of the course unit.

M1 - "LABORATÓRIOS DE QUÍMICA-FÍSICA" Effective completion of the 5 experiments and corresponding reports. Correct maintenance of a laboratory notebook. Oral presentations.
M2 - DRAWING OVERVIEW AND INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION
Students have to attend to 75% of the classes.
M1 - "LABORATÓRIOS DE QUÍMICA-FÍSICA" Reports (short and formal) + Global laboratory skills : 65% ; Dedicated laboratory notebook: 15% Oral presentations: 5+15%. M2 - DRAWING OVERVIEW AND INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION M2 classification = 60 % of the grade of the evaluation test, which should be greater or equal to six (6) ("Orthographic representation and dimensioning” + “Isometric representation") + 40 % of the average grade of the proposed homeworks.
