Objectives

To provide basic instruments for the understanding of the materials behaviours (structural and fuctional) and of their interfaces with the environment, namely in biological systems.

Learning outcomes and competences

Acquisiton of fundamental knowledge on Materials Science.

Capacity to integrate different knowledges.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Background knowledge in physics, Chemistry and Biology at the level of 12th year of  education in Portugal.

Program

1- Biomimetic systems

2- Basic concepts on solids mechanics. Mechanical properties of materials

3- Phase equilibria involving solid state. Non-equilibrium situations.

4-Atomic, Molecular and Crystalline structures and their relationships with materials properties. Relevance of strucutal (crystaline)  deffects, porosity, anisoteropy, among others. Imperfections.

5- Semiconductors and superconducturs.

6- Strucutre and properties of Material-Solution interface. Interface electrochemistry.

7- Relationships between strucutre and properties of Polymers, Ceramics, Metals, Composites and Hydrogels.

8- Interactions of materials with industrial and biological environments. Surface modifications to improve wear  resistance, as well as chemical and biological degradation resistance and their effects on the surrounding environment.

9- Biomaterials

10- Nanomaterials

Lab sessions:Processing ceramic materiails,Mechanical tests of ceramics and polymers,Phase diagrams, mechanical processing and metal properties
