To enable the students to cope with the main issues related to the optimized operation of electric power systems
The students should be able to:
Cover the fundamental aspects of the operation of interconnected power systems (CDIO 4.3, 4.4, 4.6).
Conceptualize and formulate the different problems associated to the efficient technical and economic management of a Power System (CDIO 1.3, 1.4, 2.3, 2.5, 4.3, 4.4, 4.6).
To know and apply optimization methods and computational tools to support the operation of transmission and distribution networks (CDIO 2.1, 2.3, 3.2, 3.3).
Economic management of power systems. Unit commitment. Economic Dispatch. Hydrothermal coordination. Consideration of the transmission network. Reactive power dispatch. Optimal power flow. Generating and transmission system. Operation scenarios and interconnections. Security of supply. Ancillary services. Dispatch of distribution networks. Network reconfiguration.
Lectures, discussion and interaction about concepts and foundations of the methodologies. Tutorial classes dedicated to the development of small group projects that constitute the assignments of the course.

Successful completion of the two assignments (at least 8 out of 20).
Written exam, 50%
Assignments, 50%
(Minimum of 8/20 in both components)
Assignments to be developed during classes and during the time of autonomous work.
All the students must complete the assignments. Assignment reports must be delivered up to the same deadlines fixed for the other students. In the special cases defined by NGA, an additional laboratory exam will be required.
A second opportunity for the exam is available.
Distributed evaluation cannot by its nature be improved.
