Teaching language

Suitable for English-speaking students

Objectives

-Consolidation of knowledge in advanced engineering concepts, namely in gas separation and effluent and wastes treatment.

Learning outcomes and competences

Acquisition of competences in experimentation and scientific research (formulation and test of hypothesis, experimental design, search of information).I

Incentive to the development of critical and creative thinking in the resolution of engineering problems.

Acquisition of communication competences (oral and written). Stimulus to group work and direct contact with industrial contexts.

Working method

Presencial

Program

DEMM module

1. Cementation of metals in solution 2. Leaching of metals from wastes 3. Precipitation of metals in solutions

DEQ module

4. Chemical oxidation with Fenton’s Reactant 5. Adsorption of gaseous streams in activated carbon; 6. Determination of mass transfer coefficients on sub-surface aeration systems; 7. Sedimentation/clarification ; 8. Effluent treatment with membrane processes

Mandatory literature

Docentes da UC; Manuais de apoio aos trabalhos laboratoriais (Site)

Teaching methods and learning activities

Each class is divided in 5 groups of 2 to 3 elements each. Each group will perform 3 lab works (1 to 3) at DEMM - Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering - and 4 works (4 to 8) at DEQ - Depatment of Chemical Engineering . Each work will take place in one 3h lab session. Each group will present 2 reports (1 at DEQ and 1 at DEMM) and will perform 1 oral discussion of one of the works performed at DEQ. Each group will participate in one field trip to a water/wastewater treatment plant and maybe in one visit to lab and pilot-scale experimental units at FEUP, developed in the context of Environmental Engineering.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Defesa pública de dissertação, de relatório de projeto ou estágio, ou de tese 20,00
Trabalho laboratorial 80,00
Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

Students who miss more than one lab class without formal justification will not obtain frequency.

Calculation formula of final grade

CF = 0.35 x AC + 0.55 x (R1 + R2 + D1)/3 + 0.10 х R3

CF - final grade; AC – continuous evaluation, for classes at DEQ and DEMM; Ri – evaluation for report i; Di - evaluation of oral discussion i.

Examinations or Special Assignments

non-applicable.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

There will be one exam consisting of: i) one pre-exam to make sure that the student can safely operate the experimental setups (30 minutes of oral questions about the operation of the main equipments; ii) lab exam that includes 3 lab works included in the syllabus (in a shortened version to be defined by the teachers) and iii) report/oral discussion on the 3 works performed. Classification = 0,3 x EL + 0,7 x (R1+R2+D1)/3

Classification improvement

Lab exam (with theoretical and practical component) corresponding to one of the lab works in the syllabus and one report on that work. The information on continuous evaluation will be maintained. Classification = 0,30 x EL + 0,35 x R + 0,35 x AC Note: A minimum grade of 10 in the lab exam is required.

Observations

Protocols/tutorials for each lab work will be provided.
