Objectives

Acquisition of concepts, theories and knowledge about the physical processes of interaction of sea waves with solid boundaries and structures.
Introduction to conception, design, implementation and monitoring of various marine structures and port based on knowledge of the phenomena of interaction agitation/solid boundaries and structures.
Laboratorial and numerical techniques for wave modelling and design.
Introduction to port planning. Harbour and coastal structures design. Environmental problems related with harbours.

Program

Maritime Hydraulics (2nd part): Wave action on coastal and harbour structures (cont.). Wave propagation and interaction (cont.). Modelling. Physical modelling. Long period waves. Irregular waves. Wave spectra. Structural components and construction techniques (2nd part): Design of coastal protection structures.
Planning of ports: physical planning, berth and terminal design, equipments, marinas, dredging works.
Environmental issues: coastal environments, estuarine systems, EIA (Environmental impact assessment) and fight against pollution.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:
The curricular unit of Maritime Works covers topics on the sea coast, interventions, port and coastal structures essential to the education of civil engineering professionals highly qualified to deal with these issues at the level of conception, design, implementation and monitoring of interventions. A country that strategically defends a strong connection to the sea needs these professionals.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Presentation of the subjects by using a great variety of practical examples. Specific spreading of concepts and terminologies. The importance of the conception of the solutions and the physical aspects. Methodologies of calculation. Constructive aspects. The interconnection with other subjects of the degree courses. Conferences with foreign speakers. Study visits. Applications.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The used teaching methodologies allow to deal with main themes related to maritime works, analysis, discussion and critical interpretation of results, emphasizing the potential of writing communication, problem formulation and certification.

Eligibility for exams

Achieving final classification requires compliance with attendance at the course unit, according to the MIEC assessment rules. It is considered that students meet the attendance requirements if, having been regularly enrolled, the number of absences of 25% for each of the classes’ types is not exceeded.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade is the result of the sum of two evaluations:

- Work T : 0 - 20 points (weight 5/20)
- Final exam E : 0 - 20 points (weght 15/20)
- Final grade = (Tx 4/20) + (E x15/20), scale 0 to 20 points

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

In accordance with FEUP assessment regulations. SPECIAL RULES FOR MOBILITY STUDENTS: Proficiency in Portuguese or in English. In the written exams, exercises ou practical works, mobility students may use one of the following languages: Portuguese, English, Spanish and French.
