Objectives

This topic aims to present the most relevant foundry processes, among sand foundry, pattern making, core manufacture, atmospheric permanent mould casting, high pressure die casting and investment casting. There will be a part concerning manufacture molten metal alloys: cast iron, steel and aluminium alloys.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students will learn about main foundry processes and capabilities, adequate selection of moulding, core and pouring process. Common defects shall be also addressed, along with how to melt and control a cast alloy.

Working method

Presencial

Program

1. The foundry process concept - typical applications and limitations - patterns, core boxes and moulding machines. 2. Green sand foundry - sand control and moulding equipment. 3. Self-setting sand process.4. The permanent mould process and High pressure die casting. 5. Common casting Defects 6. Manufacture of cast irons and cast steel. 7. Manufacture of Al alloys

Mandatory literature

Teaching methods and learning activities

Into the theoretical lectures, students will learn main aspects of each topic. There will be a small research work on thematic topics to be presented and discussed into the class. There will be practical classes on sand moulding, core manufacture, molten metal manufacture and treatment, and casting finishing. Some thematic talks, by foundry specialists may be given, along with to practical foundry technical visits.

Eligibility for exams

Students will be approved if get 50%, which involve the practical research project and the attendance to practical classes

Calculation formula of final grade

Theoretical part 50% into two tests- Practical grade - 15% practical work, 15% presentation and 20% for report

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Practical foundry work that includes a report where the candidate refers and arguments all chises and results of the manufacture of an experimental casting, including moulding and core manufacture, molten metal manufacture and casting, analysis of casting defects and dimensional variability on it. It also should include a foundry test sample analysis made on sand lab.
