Tests allow us to determine the properties of the materials, which is essential to predict the performance in service, analyze potential failures and control the manufacturing process. As so, it is fundamental for a material engineer to possess a vast knowledge about the most applied tests, understand how they are chosen, how they are performed and how to interpret the results. Being a part of the curriculum of the MIEMM, this unit will permit the integration of the tests knowledge with the materials mechanical behavior comprehension, addressed in others course units, an essential requirement to its proper application.
Goals
This unit is supposed to address the main essays for the mechanical properties determination and the main non-destructive tests for the determination of defects and failures, giving emphasis to the physic and mechanical principles, the test methods based on applicable norms and the interpretation of results.
Students are expected to:
- master the main tests for the mechanical properties determination and the main non-destructive tests for the determination of defects and failures;
- be capable of applying norms when doing tests and interpret the results;
- be capable of evaluating the aptitude of a given material for a certain application based on the results of the tests.
Introduction to the materials testing. Tension, compression, bending, torsion and shear testing. Hardness testing. Impact and toughness testing. Creep testing. Wear testing. Nondestructive tests: industrial radiography, liquid penetrant, magnetic-particle, Eddy current and ultrasonic testing.
Theoretical-practical classes – presentation of the tests which are part of the program and problem solving cases. Practical classes – exercise solving and laboratorial classes in order to contact with the main tests.

To be admitted to exams, students: - have to do all the practical assignments. - cannot miss more than 25 % of the practical classes.
Final grade = 0.65 x Exam grade + 0.35 x Practical component grade
Special cases will be assessed with a written exam (65 % of the final grade) plus a practical assignment (35 % of the final grade).
Special cases will be assessed with a written exam (65 % of the final grade) plus a practical assignment (35 % of the final grade).
Students can improve the theoretical-practical component by attending an extra exam.
