The learning objectives of this course include the development of the following professional attitude and skills:
a) autonomy and initiative in knowledge acquisition and integration of multimedia technologies;
b) multidisciplinary project and teamwork management skills;
c) concept, design and implementation of new innovative multimedia systems and applications, based in emergent technologies;
d) multimedia content specification and production, with communication effectiveness for the target public.
As a result of project based learning, developed in multi-disciplinary teams, it is intended that students acquire multimedia skills in knowledge integration, project management, content production, design and implementation of new products, systems and applications.
Technology mediated human communication.
Empathy and emotion in narrative and culture.
Behavioural economics and user experience.
Project 1: Digital Narratives
The transmission of human culture has always been made through narrative. In this project we intend to explore the language of the new media in the construction of narratives.
Project 2: Social interaction systems
It is the social interaction that makes us human. This project intends to develop new forms of technology mediated social interaction.
Due to the multidisciplinary nature of multimedia, the Lab course is operated in Project Based Learning groups. Projects are developed in teams, from the several programmes offering this course.
The methodology for development is organized in four iterative phases: discover, define, develop, deliver (double diamond). Tools for planning, document and communicate the projects are also addressed.

Active participation in the planning and development of the teamwork projects must be demonstrated.
The final grade results of the arithmetic average of the marks obtained in the projects. In each project are evaluated the following components:
a) 50% Project results:
prototype demonstration (success in meeting the goals, degree of innovation, communication effectiveness, production quality, technical solution);
b) 25% Project communication: idea pitch, project pitch, project site, marketing teaser)
c) 25% Documentation of the project: user experience, technology and interface specifications.
The final grade of each student will also depend on the results obtained in the peer review of his participation in the team.
Students under special assessment must also demonstrate active participation in the planning and development of the teamwork projects. Participation will be in a manner to be agreed with the teachers and the project groups, in order to facilitate independent activity, not requiring the presence in the classroom.
As the assessment results from a distributed evaluation of a group project, without final exam, students may only improve their grades if they participate in a new edition of the course.
