Objectives

Students taking Dissertation are expected to carry out individual work of research and development leading to the writing of a scientific dissertation on a subject in the area of knowledge of the degree, aiming to integrate and apply skills and attitudes acquired during the course to solving complex problems of engineering knowledge. The dissertation work can be a research and / or technological development and application, involving experimental means and / or simulation, that promotes the development of the student's initiative, decision-making, innovation, and of creative and critical thinking. It should involve the analysis of new situations, gathering relevant information development and selection or design of methodological approaches and tools for the resolution of the problem, its resolution, the exercise of synthesis and preparation of the findings, and the writing up of a dissertation to be publicly presentation and discussed.

Learning outcomes and competences

Development of the capacity of initiative, decision-making, innovation, creative and critical thinking in solving complex engineering problems. Competence to perform individual work of research and development.

Program

The public presentation and defense of thesis will take place in July 2015. The deadline for the submission of the draft version of the thesis will be set by resolution of MIB's Scientific Committee, but will presumably be around mid-June. At the designated deadline, three paper copies of the thesis must be handed in to the secretariat of course. After the public presentation and defense, and for official archival purposes (FEUP Library + National Observatory of Science and Higher Education Library), it is necessary to hand in to the Academic Services (Division of Pre-graduation), the following copies of the final version of the dissertation: a. TWO paper (FEUP + BN) b. THREE CD in pdf format (BN + + FEUP OCES). These copies should include any modifications required by jury during the public defense, duly validated by the president of the jury, .

According to the rules governing the dissertation work, during the course of work the applicant must provide (in a web page) any intermediate results and information necessary for evaluating the progress of work, for consultation by the supervisor and the defense committee.

Mandatory literature

Alexandre Pereira, Carlos Poupa; Como escrever uma tese. ISBN: 972-618-350-2

Teaching methods and learning activities

The Dissertation work may be performed in an academic environment or an academic and business one. In the second case the objectives, the nature and form of monitoring of work should be agreed in advance between the student, the faculty and the host company's supervisors (the model contract will be provided by the secretariat of the course). This contract will be validated by the Course Director, and ensures that the scientific and pedagogical objectives are achieved, whilst protecting any confidentiality issues by the host company / institution.
