This course aims at providing a supplementary instruction in domains of Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering and other technical and professional domains, in order to prepare future chemical engineers for working in companies which produce, process and/or sell polymers. At the end of the course, students should be acquainted with scientific and technological aspects of artificial and synthetic polymers, physical properties and transformation processes. A special emphasis is given to enterprise and social methods assessment. Students should also develop their skills on bibliography research, technical English, computer applications related with polymers modelling and oral and written communication.
After passing the Curricular Unit, students should be able to interpret results of rheologic characterization and mechanical testing of polymeric materials, relating them with physico-chemical characteristics and antecipating their implications in terms of evaluation of the material quality.
1. Industrial rehology of molten polymers and in solution/dispersion
Rheologic phenomena
Viscosity

Rheologic tests - laboratorial practices
2.Industrial processing of polymer materials

Thermosets - reaction injection molding, rubber transformation
Composite materials.
3.Properties in solid state
Crystallinity
Thermal transitions
Experimental characterization techniques
4.Mechanical properties of solid polymers
Viscoelasticity
Properties and pre cracking behaviour
Tests used in industry
5.Additives, mixtures and composites
- Industrial rehology of molten polymers and in solution/dispersion
Lectures supported by presentation of slides. Tutorial sessions with resolution of problems, previously distributed to the students. Laboratory sessions on polymer rheology. Home works consisting in problems with large extension and use of computational resources, too long for solving during a tutorial session, and reports on specific themes.
- Mechanical properties of solid polymers
All classes have a theoretical-pratical nature, based simultaneously on:
1) Exposition and discussion of concepts by teacher and students.
2) Execution of experimental works, both in the class room and in laboratory, involving observation and characterization of physical-mechanical behavior of polymeric materials.
