a. Project Justification The chair aims at practical application of concepts learned in the previous chairs as Drawing, EACO and Metal Casting - Foundry, the development of foundry equipment - mold pattern plates and core boxes in open and close cooperation with a small group and selected a few companies with the means and knowledge required for this purpose, especially the companies they work for graduates of this course. b. Objectives Apply a set of knowledge acquired throughout the training course in the development of design methodologies applied to the manufacture of foundry equipment: pattern plates, mold, chill molds and core boxes, mold or permanent mold casting, involving knowledge of the areas of design - tolerances, metrological control - Casting - processing alloy, molding processes, shape analysis and optimization of power systems and gitagem - Computer Aided Engineering - 3D modeling and rapid prototyping - and application of quality system, and simulation of the filling and the solidification of cavities.
c. Competencies and learning outcomes - gain skills on engineering and design requirements; - analyze the impact on society of the development and application of this methodology work; - select, research and present the procedures that lead to more effective manufacture of castings; - analyze critically the existing literature highlighting the most important aspects that may have more immediate industrial application; - work together and acquire competence in strategic communication (written and oral) and motivation.
Techniques of computer aided design, metal alloys and characteristic properties, heat treatment
[1] - metrological control of castings, pattern plates and core boxes: planes and axes of reference, reference dimensions, tolerance grades and standards. Application to the processing of drawings defining the drawings boards mold and core boxes. [2] - Shape Analysis: Thermal diagrams , hot spots and feeding channels, reference diameters and geometry of the feeders, feeding aids. Feeder location. Feeding Distances. [3] - Gating system: The principles of Bernoulli and Torricelli. The law of continuity. The filling time and the coefficient of frictional speed losses. The lay-out of the gating system. Pressurized and non-pressurized systems and gating ratio. The filling time and choke location. Use of filters. [4] - Simulation of the mould filling and the solidification: the thermal diagram: auxiliary programs for selection of feeders and gating system design, selection of physical and thermal parameters of the alloy and molding material selection for the casting process , post-processing parameters of the simulation results.
Lectures are given in partnership with a group of seven reference foundry companies of the national students who will enter the discipline in project implementation and power gitagem with its experimental validation dimensional mold-plates and castings, and validation of projects in the manufacture of castings free from defects. The theoretical and practical will be presented at FEUP, in modules of 90 minutes, with reference to the main topics of the subject. The class is divided into groups of two students that implement the various phases of the project, in cooperation with the firm assigned. Teaching time remaining is available for students to follow the project in the company and work for him at FEUP in CINFU or the Company. The teacher is always available at FEUP, in school hours, or outside, when combined or email.

The evaluation is carried out in two stages: an intermediate presentation on November 2013, using PowerPoint and practical examples and a final presentation of a final report which accompanied describing the methods and fundamental stages of the project in accordance with requirements attached. The presentation has an intermediate value of 40% of the final grade. The report and final presentation have to quote 60% of the final grade. The opinion of the supervisor in the company is taken into account for the formation of the final grade. The frequency is obtained by obtaining at least a score of 10 in 20, and the projected frequency in class, at leat 9 classes.
40% of the grade with the first presentation and discussion and 60% with the reporting and work and final presentation.
Not included in the current academic year
Reformulation of the final report, with the introduction of the necessary improvements.
