Teaching language

Suitable for English-speaking students

Objectives

Presentation of the theoretical concepts and procedures related to materials selection (metal, glass, ceramic, polymers, elastomer and hybrid materials) considering their typical properties, evaluation, application, moulding processes, performance and use.

Learning outcomes and competences

Professional expertise and learning skills - students will acquire expertise on the relationship between  material properties and process manufacture, on the methodologies of material selection and will be able to critically analyse the bibliographic information available, retrieving the most important topics with swift industrial application; they will also learn how to work in teams and experience personal skills on communication.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Students must have previous knowledge between manufacture process and main materials properties

Program

1. Design process: concept and alternative types of design. Design tools and materials database. Relationship between component function, material, geometry and processing. Example of development of design concept. 2. Engineering materials and their characteristic properties: materials families – metals, polymers, glasses, ceramics, elastomers and hybrid materials. Range of typical properties of each materials family. 3. Materials properties letters: concepts, types of exploration of materials properties by using materials letters. 4. General selection of materials: selection strategies, materials index and component profile, selection processes by specification of functional requirements: requirements transcription, selection by attribute limits and ordering of materials index. Attribute limit and materials index. Components functional requirements and selection methodology of materials index. Transcription methodology of component functional requirements. Materials selection based on attributes limits. Ordering: materials index and letters. Complementary information. Materials selection based on Ces EduPack software and using materials databases. Structural indexes. Examples of application and study cases. 5. Moulding processes: components geometrical attributes and implication in moulding processes selection. Processes families: moulding, joining. Processes systematic selection strategy. Processes selection based on economic criteria. 6. Restrictions and multiples objectives: selection with multiple restrictions. Antagonistic objectives, penalization function and permutation constants 7. Materials selection and component shape effect: Limits for shape efficiency. Structural section. Component shape influence on the selection of materials index. Simultaneous selection of shape and material. 8. Materials and environment: materials life cycle. Materials and energy consumption systems. Environmental attributes of materials: eco-attributes. Materials production and energy consumption, end of life and ecological indicators. Eco selection.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Brief presentation of the most relevant theoretical aspects and use o CES Edupack softwate in the resolution of problems of materials selection. Theoretical-practical and practical assignments related to the themes of this course unit, so that students can apply the concepts. The assignments should be carried out in groups of two or three students. Presentation, discussion and assessment of assignments.
