Objectives

To provide the students with an elementary background in the field of mechanical behavior of materials and about the main groups of materials.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is expected that at the end of the course, the students be able to:
-          Compare materials according to their static and dynamic mechanical properties.
- Explain the role of the crystal defects and other variables in the mechanical behavior.
- Know the strengthening mechanics, their advantages and limitations.
- Relate the microstructure with the mechanical properties through the study of the equilibrium diagrams.
- Know (structure, types and properties) the ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.
- Know (structure, types and properties) the ceramics.
- Know (structure, types and properties) the polymers.
Know (structure, types and properties) the composites.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Exame 80,00
Trabalho escrito 20,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Elaboração de relatório/dissertação/tese 50,00
Estudo autónomo 40,00
Frequência das aulas 52,00
Trabalho laboratorial 20,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

Presence of at least 75% of laboratory classes is mandatory to final exam admission.

Calculation formula of final grade

Weighted means of the marks of 2 Tests and reports:

1st test (written) on the mechnaical behaiour of materials

2nd test (Moodle) on the classes of materials

A minimum score of 7 out of 20 values in each of the tests is required

Final Mark = (1st test) * 0.5 * (Reports)*0.2 + (2nd test)*0.3

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
