Objectives

OBJECTIVES: To formulate mathematical models with differential equations related to civil engineering problems. To understand different methods to solve partial differential equations and how to use it in several areas of civil engineering

Learning outcomes and competences

SKILLS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES: To select, adjust and apply different methods for solving civil engineering problems modeled by partial differential equations. To perform an correct analysis and interpretation of results.

Application of numerical models with partial differential equations in the numerical resolution of mathematical models in Engineering. Concepts and techniques to solve partial differential equations. Compared analysis of the adequacy of several alternative methods. Numerical simulation of models using MATLAB®. Analysis and interpretation of results.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:

The construction of mathematical models and the use of software to solve models with partial differential equations enable the achievement of the objectives, namely allowing to understand the fundamentals of different methods and its application to civil engineering problems

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching involves sessions with theoretical presentations and discussions. The student grading will be based on a report assignment and a written exam if necessary.

The report assignment and the discussion of the UC contents allows for an efficient learning experience at this education level.
