This course aims to provide information about polymers materials also known as geossynthetics, their applications in Civil Engineering and proper design methodologies.
Advanced engineering fundamental knowledge; engineering reasoning and problem solving; experimentation and knowledge discovery; designing
Classification; materials; production processes; use and positioning in the construction site; Durability; polymer susceptibility and degradation agents; role of the structure and types of joints; damage during construction; geosynthetics creep; applicable safety coefficients. Functions and properties; properties control tests; European standards; identification and control tests, quantification tests and application control tests. Empirical design. Analytical design: conditions of application; identification of functions; factors which affect the design and properties to be considered; design criteria; definition of the value of the fundamental properties; identification and quality control tests.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:
The increasing use of geosynthetics to replace natural materials in civil engineering works associated with the low cost of these materials, simplicity of application and contribution to reducing the environmental impact are important factors to present appropriate techniques of design, application and quality control of geosynthetics in different types of civil engineering works.
The teaching involves sessions with theoretical presentations and discussions. The student grading will be based on a report assignment and a written exam if necessary.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The report assignment and the discussion of the CU contents allows for an efficient learning experience at this education level.
