Objectives

The aim of this course is to evaluate the student's ability to develop a dissertation that treats a specific topic in Science and Technology of Materials. The students have the opportunity to work on the dissertation in academic or business and academic environment as provided in the document “Normas para o funcionamento da Dissertação dos Mestrados Integrados”.

Learning outcomes and competences

In a business environment, students apply their knowledge of Science and Technology of Materials issues to design solutions to real or potential engineering problems. So in this way students are provided with skills to plan and implement engineering projects or to manage business processes. In academic environment, students have the opportunity to explore a topic in a greater scientific depth, acquiring valuable skils for future R&D&I activities or doctoral Materials Science and Engineering program.
This unit provides students with a deepen technological expertise in specific areas. The students assimilate the processes, practices and methodologies associated with scientific research; develop the scientific criticism; techniques of written, electronics/multimedia and oral communication.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Depending on the theme, students apply the knowledge acquired during the master´s programme. This curricular unit should be the last of the study programme and the theme should be related to the theme of Seminar previously attended.

Program

There is not a program for this course. Each student develops a topic in Science and Technology of Materials under the supervision of a professor of the MIEMM. In some cases, there may also be a national or foreign co-supervisor.
The themes are presented to students in a pre-organized session at a date set by the MIEMM Director, taking place in the first week of the 1st semester. Each proposal must include a title objectives and, if applicable, the name of the company involved. The themes chosen by the students should be communicated to the Course Director within one month after the beginning of the 1st semester. The dissertations that take place in a business environment are subject to an agreement between the company and FEUP (see agreement form for Dissertations in a business environment).

Comments from the literature

The bibliography is specific to each theme.

Teaching methods and learning activities

As already said, the dissertation work is an individual work which emphasizes the components of research, innovation and/or development (including complex engineering problems), held in academic or academic and business environment.

Observations

The Dissertation work can take place in a national or foreign institution.
There are some specific rules concerning the written report (in Portuguese or English) and the oral presentation of the dissertation stated on the document “Dissertação – Instruções”, accessible from the contents of this curricular unit. Three printed copies and one digital version must be submitted before the deadline date and the public defence date is scheduled during the exam period. Between the two dates is at least one month. The oral presentation will be limited to 10 minutes, followed by 35 minutes for the discussion.
The FEUP regulations require the student deposit one digital copy on CD of the final version of the dissertation. The CD must be signed by the supervisor or the president of the jury and accompanied by the submission form and, if necessary, the confidentiality request.
