Objectives

The main objective of the course is to familiarize students with the materials characterization techniques, especially the ones available at the department laboratories
To raise the students awareness of the importance of standardization in obtaining reliable experimental results, and comparable with others, is also a goal.
Students are encouraged to acquire knowledge of methods of collection, processing and analysis of data and practice technical writing and oral communication.
The course also aims to raise awareness among students of the importance of proper use and calibration of laboratory equipment, as well as laboratory safety standards.

Learning outcomes and competences

Afterattending this course, students will:

Know and browse standards to select appropriate conditions for each test. Apply sampling methods to ensure the representativeness of the results. Process and analyze the results in order to be able to establish relationships between material properties, their structure and chemical composition. Know the main methods for mechanical characterization of materials hardness and strength, and be familarized with the equipments. Know how to plan and get results of differential scanning calorimetry tests, to determine the phase transformations of the materials. Know the procedures to determine the chemical composition of materials by atomic absorption spectrometry.

Program

1. Introduction to laboratory practices.  Rules to write and present technical reports. Report structure. Treatment, analysis and presentation of experimental results.(These contents are presented to students in notes provided by teachers).
2. Quality and safety standards in laboratory practice. Rules and basic safety standards in laboratory. Good laboratory practices. Waste management aspects.
3. Mechanical tests - Tensile strength and hardness. Plannig tests accordingly to the standards. Preparation of test samples. Data processing and analysis.
4. Calorimetry techniques. Exploring Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) tests. Test planning and determination of transformation points.
5. Chemical analysis by atomic absorption spectrometry. Sample preparation and determination of the calibration curve. Data processing and analysis.
6. Observation and quantification of the microstructures of the materials analyzed by other techniques.

Comments from the literature

The bibliography is complemented by presentations of the teacher. Students will also have to rely on bibliography of course units whose frequency is indicated as a prerequisite.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Practical classes begin with a brief overview to the topics of the work. Considering the material to test and after consulting the relevant standards, students plan their practical work. The implementation of the work plan is monitored by the professor with the support of technical staff DEMM. The experimental results after treatment and analysis are subject to written reports and oral presentations followed by discussion.
