To efficiently acquire advanced engineering knowledge in the operation and design of processes and technologies of treatment liquid effluents .
To develop students’ reasoning and problem solving skills regarding the operation and design of pollution control systems.

1.Water quality, chemical and microbiological characteristics
-Water quality (quality indicators, quality criteria and standards for the different uses of water, Portuguese and European Union regulations); qualitative and quantitative characterization of domestic and industrial wastewater
2. Technologies of physico-chemical treatments in a liquid environment
-Flow equalization and concentration homogenization; neutralization; sedimentation; flotation; chemical coagulation/flocculation.
3. Liquid effluents –Biological treatment technologies
-Aerobic processes
-Suspended biomass technologies and fixed biomass technologies
a) General theoretical-practical classes will be based on the presentation of the themes of the course unit, along with the discussion of practical examples and/or resolution of problems;
b) Laboratory classes on themes of this course unit.

Students have to attend classes in accordance with the General Evaluation Rules of FEUP.
a) Continuous Assessment- Problem resolution+lab report(40%)
b) Final Exam (60%) - distributed for two moments: first moment-november 2, 13:30 H; second moment-january, in acordance with the final exams calendar.
To complete this course unit, students have to reach a minimum grade of 8 in the final exam and minimum average grade of 10 out of 20.
