Objectives

This course deals with the fundamental principles of chemistry and shows its importance in our everyday life. It is important not only for ordinary tasks, but also for big factories. In a first stage, it will be given a macroscopic overview on the chemical phenomena. It will be followed by references to electronic structure and chemical connection. Subsequently, concepts related with intermolecular interactions and the way they influence the level organized matter will be presented.
Students will be aware of the importance of bibliography, functional research and how to quote adequately.
All concepts will be exemplified by real examples, as far as the different aspects of environmental impact of chemical processes, production and storage of energy (energies and fuel cells), emerging technologies (photovoltaic and solar), new materials (biomaterials) and nanotechnologies are concerned.

Learning outcomes and competences

Ability to deal with the abstract nature associated to chemistry.
Understaning and mastery of symbolic language associated with chemistry.
Relate the properties of matter with the electronic configuration of atoms and the way they bind with each other.
Ability to recognize and identify materials by their chemical properties.
Ability to solve chemical, physical and engineering problems qualitatively and quantitatively.
Acquire basic laboratory skills.
Assimilate the basic concepts of laboratory safety and hygiene.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical and theoretical-practical classes will be based on numerical application and group assignments (2,5 hours a week). There will also be tutorial classes in groups, which will last 1 hour per week.
Themes of the course will be explained, whenever possible, by laboratory assignments, which will take place at the chemistry labs (sessions of 3 hours each).

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Participação presencial 10,00
Teste 70,00
Trabalho laboratorial 20,00
Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

Notwithstanding the provisions of Art. 4 of the NGA, a student obtains frequency when performing 80% of homework and all tests, and yet attends to all experimental lab sessions. On successful completion of the laboratory component the so obtained mark is valid for the year and can be maintained for the following academic years, provided there is no significant change in the contents, or the evaluation mode.
For a detailed description of the grade system, consult the general information of the course for the current academic year. There are no alternative frequency criteria (cf. Art.4, n. 3 d NGA).

Calculation formula of final grade

Students will be assessed as follows:
70%- CT, monthly test
15%- CE, weekly homework
20%- CL, laboratory assignments
A minimum grade of 10 out of 20 is mandatory for CT and CL.
Students can only complete the course, if they achieve a minimum grade of 10 out of 20.
For a detailed description of the grade system, consult the general information of the course for the current academic year.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Not applicable (Article 10, Paragraph 2, 3 of General Grading Rules of FEUP)

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

By appropriate examination, based on the written exam at the appropriate season of exams. Working students may request an evaluation scheme based on a practical exam and a final written exam. This situation should be applied for at the Professor in charge until the end of October, even for students who already have the laboratory component. The practical examination will consist of a laboratory evaluation with 3 hours duration in pattern and time to be arranged with the teacher. It will focus randomly on one or more of the experimental works of the academic year and necessarily involves experimental manipulation, preparation and reporting, besides other means of assessment which may be deemed necessary. The written examination for a maximum of 2.5 hours will be held during the examination period January - February, the same date as other students. The matter of the written examination focuses in detail on all matters included in the current program for the course, including written questions on the laboratory component.
Students can only complete the course, if they achieve a minimum grade of 10 out of 20.

Classification improvement

It is not possible to remake individual components of distributed evaluation given their cooperative nature in some cases and extent. In the case of the laboratory evaluation and exercices the process takes place in group and is cooperative.
For a detailed description of the grade system, consult the general information of the course for the current academic year.

Observations

This information must be completed with the reading of the syllabus and the detailed information available at web page of the course.
All missing cases should be submitted to the teacher responsible for the subject, which shall be governed by the existing general grading rules of FEUP.
