The main goal of this class is to teach students the fundamental principles of information transmission over noisy channel and show how they are applied in the design of the basic components of contemporary communication systems. For this purpose, we present with some detail the main results of information theory, namely the source coding and channel coding theorems, while confronting the student with practical coding schemes and their performance.
We expect the students to develop the following competences:
- familiarity with the basic components of a communications systems;
- detailed knowledge of the fundamental limits of communication and the most common coding algorithms;
- ability for abstract reasoning and understanding of the mathematical models based upon which transmitters and receivers are designed;
- sensitivity to the problems raised by noise and the most relevant performance metrics for the analysis of communication systems;
- ability to apply the acquired knowledge in solving complex engineering problems.
Some maturity in mathematical analysis, linear algebra and probability theory, as well as a first contact with signal theory and digital processing.
