Objectives

The development of capacities of synthesis and analysis of Chemical Processes, in an open framework, to identify viable processes and apply criteria to select the best suited one. To develop an integrated project, working in teams, of a new industrial plant facility or the retrofitting of an existing plant that will include: -definition/selection of an adequate operation sequence (flowsheet); -preparation of a detailed mass and energy balances; -design and specification of main required process equipment; -preliminary plant layout; -estimation of project cost (capital, operation, financial, other) and profitability analysis; -risk/safety analysis.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students learn to develop a preliminary design of an industrial installation. Acquire skills in base calculations for project  design and work in teams. They develop also communication skills.

Program

The main objective of this course unit is the development of a project by the students applying the knowledge acquired in various subjects of MIEQ, with particular importance to the knowledge acquired in the subject Introduction to Engineering Project (IPE). The project will consider the design and analysis of several pieces of equipment of an industrial installation, the economic analysis, consideration of the environmental impact and preliminary analysis of risk/safety. The project will be conducted in groups formed by 4 and 3 and 5 (particular cases) students.

Mandatory literature

Comments from the literature

Bibliography suggested in suveral unit courses of MIEQ with particular importance for the bibliography provided in the course unit of introduction to engineering project.

Teaching methods and learning activities

There will be weekly sessions with each group and the supervisors to evaluate the work progress and to discuss future strategies. The progress and quality of the project is the responsibility of students. The supervisors’ responsibilities are to follow the project. The project supervisors may request partial reports if necessary.  Date to finish the project report: December 23, 2014 Project presentation and discussion: 4 and 5 January 2015.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Defesa pública de dissertação, de relatório de projeto ou estágio, ou de tese 30,00
Trabalho escrito 70,00
Total: 100,00

Eligibility for exams

Not applicable.

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation of the course unit consists of three components: Component 1 – Project and project report (70%). Component 2 - Presentation preparation, project presentation and discussion of the project and project report (30%).

CF=0,7*CF1+0,3*CF2

NOTE 1: The rating assignment in the top 10% assumes that work content is very good and the report is very well presented and without spelling errors. The presentation of the work, including discussion, will have a total duration of 40 minutes (20 minutes for the presentation and 20 minutes of discussion).

NOTE 2: The group classification CF may be adjusted for each element of the group up to a maximum of ± 2 values, according to the performance of the elements of the group in all tasks related of the course unit.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Not applicable.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Not applicable.

Classification improvement

Not appicable.
