Objectives
It focuses on presenting and discussing the debate on urban space production, following a methodology based on three phases:
(i) perception of urban spaces ,
(ii) review of recent history of urbanism and of the main utopias from the past
(iii) interpretation of the forms and tendencies of the process of urban production in the various dimensions, and debate on better urban spaces looking at the current debates in urban planning.
Learning outcomes and competences
Knowledge: Describe some periods of the history of urbanism that marked the current cities.
Application: Apply the knowledge of past and current paradigms and identify different types of urban production in different national and international contexts.
Analysis: Evaluate and distinguish urban problems and need for intervention. Develop capacity to analyze and compare different types of intervention. Discuss best strategies and intervention processes in urban areas.
Synthesis: Propose and explain criteria leading to the choice of more sustainable solutions in urban areas.
Evaluation: Evaluate and criticize existing projects and interventions in urban spaces, and discuss the current paradigms for urban areas.

I. PERCEPTION OF URBAN SPACES
- Reading urban spaces: spaces, places and functions; the image of the city
- Identifying different modes of urban production, resulting from different periods in the history of the city
II. UNDERSTANDING THE MAIN UTOPIAS FROM THE PAST
- Review of the main Utopias from the past: ideologies and proposals
- Evolution of types of urban production; urban change process and different urban forms
- heritage from the past in the contemporary city
III. DEBATE ON CONTEMPORARY PARADIGMS
- The development process: agents of the development process (public / private, partnerships,…), the market context, the regulatory context, the global and local context
- New market forces and new models of the contemporary city
- New types of production and management of urban spaces; privatization of public spaces (advantages and disadvantages); controlling space; accessibility and exclusion
- The new contemporary city: forms and behaviors that respect the principles of urban sustainability
- Debate on the following paradigms:

Eligibility for exams
Realization of two assignments during the semester.
Calculation formula of final grade
Final evaluation = Assignments (12 values) + Final exam (8 values)
