Objectives

This course aims to provide concepts of Linear Algebra, which are of crucial importance to the training of the Electrical Engineering undergraduates. The fundamental concepts include algebraic structures, linear or vector distance, matrix analysis and linear transformations. This course aims to develop students' algebraic manipulation skills, analytical and independent reasoning and the ability to apply mathematical concepts to the resolution of practical problems.

Learning outcomes and competences

- Concept of matrix and its representation and classification;
- Matrix manipulation techniques;
- Application of matrixes in the representation, classification and solving of linear equation systems;
- Concept and calculus of determinants;
- Concepts and definitions about (sub-)vector spaces and matrix manipulation of vectors;
- Relate (sub-)vector spaces with matrices and systems of linear equations;
- Concept, calculation and application of vector projections (e.g., orthogonal bases obtaining);
- Concept, representation and matrix manipulation of linear transformations;
- Concept and calculus of eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

Teaching methods and learning activities

In theoretical classes important concepts and associated results will be presented, giving special emphasis to geometrical interpretations and their practical applications. Aiming to clarify the definitions and theorems presented, demonstrations will be given each and every time that these might help to achieve that understanding and the students will be given illustrative exercises to solve.
The theoretical-practical classes aim to better orientate the study of this course by making exercises that apply the taught information.
The practical classes are used to help the student solving exercises and to clarify their doubts.
The teachers of this course will also set a Schedule to receive the students beyond class time.

Eligibility for exams

Students are admitted to exams if:
   - they are enrolled in the course;
   - they do not exceed the limit of absences (25% of theoretical-practical classes).

Students who have attended to the course in previous years and students with a special status will also be admitted to exams.

Calculation formula of final grade

To get a final classification, in the UC, a student must obtain frequency or be excused from that obtention (see above, under "Obtaining frequency"). Being in these conditions, any student can be approved doing the normal tests or the recourse exam. If a student is not approved by tests, he can still perform the recourse exam.

As for the evaluation there are four different moments, namely:
     1) First Test (T1) to be held on the day, time and room to be determined;
     2) Second Test (T2) to be held on the day, time and room to be determined;
     3) Third Test (T3) to be held on the day, time and room to be determined;
     4) Recourse Exam (E) to be marked by the services.
The T1 test will count for 6 values and the T2 and T3 tests for 7 values each (values to be confirmed).

The FINAL CLASSIFICATION in the UC will be (on a scale of 0 to 20):
     - The sum of the marks obtained in T1, T2 and T3 (total quotation of 6+7+7=20 values), or
     - The classification in the recourse exam (E), quoted to 20 values.

Important Notes:
    a) the marks obtained in the tests are not possible to recover;
    b) If a student fails to attend at one of the tests, the score of this test, to the calculation of final classification, is zero values.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students who are under special statutes (TE, DA, ...) during the current academic year, are exempt frequency. The UC approval may be obtained by doing the tests (T1, T2 and T3) or the recourse exam (E). The calculus of the classification is identical to that described above.

Classification improvement

Classification improvement will be done with a written exam (recourse period). The result represents 100% of the final classification.
