Objectives

In the last few years, there has been a remarkable development of new materials and techniques, due to demands of the construction industry and environmental concerns related to sustainability. This implies a clear understanding of behaviour of materials, characteristics of different products, application techniques and structural performance.

The main subjects of this course will be the following:

Materials: Durability; Sustainability; eco efficient additions such as rice husk ash- RHA; Waste materials in concrete; Special types of concrete; Self compacting concrete, polymer concrete; glassfiber reinforced concrete (GRC); composite materials with reinforced fibers GFPR (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer), CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) and AFRP (Aramid Fiber Reinforced Plastic); material characterization for short or long term durability

Techniques: controlled permeability formwork (CPF); special techniques for concrete; Technical reinforcement / rehabilitation of structures by adding FRP (Fiber reinforced polymer) systems; polymeric structures with concrete; general control procedures and quality assurance in accordance with the standards NPEN 1504.

Learning outcomes and competences

SKILLS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Describe the main technical specifications for products and systems that integrate new materials in construction. Identify the performance techniques associated with new materials. Define and list the general control procedures and quality assurance in accordance with the standards NPEN 1504.

The type of evaluation is "Distributed evaluation without final exam." The criteria for calculating the "Final Classification" are described in the sections above for all students enrolled at UC.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:

In recent years under the requirements of the construction industry and the growing environmental concerns leading to sustainability in construction, there has been a rapidly developing of new materials and new techniques. The future of the civil engineering will show the necessity to use and apply new materials in construction, through the clear understanding of material behavior, the form of products, application techniques and the design and subsequent operation of the structures (new, strengthened or rehabilitated).

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes are based e on oral presentations of each subject involving the use of the black board, overhead projection, powerpoint presentations and films. At the end of some of the subjects, students will have the chance to solve pratical problems. Some of the material shown during these classes will be available in the homepage. Some of the subjects dealt with in the theoretical classes, such as Durability and Special Types of Concrete, will also be focused on in the practical classes. These practical classes will comprise experimental assignments carried out in the Laboratory for full comprehension of these subjects. Theoretical-practical classes on Composites Materials will comprise of application exercises related to new criteria of material design and production. These exercises will cover the subjects such as reinforcement flexion, increase in compression and ductility of structural elements. From time to time, practical classes will be held in the Laboratory of Structures and INEGI, in order to assess properties of materials (according to standards). Lectures, sessions and technical visits to construction sites involving new materials and new construction techniques may be organized.

DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Establish and calculate the FRP composite system suitable for a structural strengthening. Find the type of polymeric concrete suitable for decorative pieces. Calculate a durable concrete and sustainable. Analysis of solutions of the type of material, execution technique and the project to aplly new materials. Propose new materials, new structural solutions, new requirements in building technology for enhancing the strength, durability and sustainability in civil engineering. Criticising the solutions chosen and the methodologies used and to anticipate the results of building with new materials in accordance with the standards NPEN 1504. Meet and contact information provided by actual companies and reflect on its content taking into account the technical specifications of materials, process execution and quality control of construction with new materials.

Eligibility for exams

According to the General Evaluation Rules in FEUP, students cannot miss more than three classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade is based on a "Continuous Assessment without Final Exam".

1. Continuous Assessment (EN)

The continuous assessment component will be based on two mini-tests (to be held during class on dates scheduled at the beginning of the semester). These are closed book tests, and each of them will last 1h 30m (maximum 2 hours). The assessment grade range is 0 to 20.

2. Re-sitting exam (ER)
According to the General Evaluation Rules in FEUP

3. Final Mark (CF)

Final Mark (CF) is defined by:

CF = max {EN ; ER}

The classification, based on a scale 0-20, is rounded to units.

The Final Mark (EN) is the arithmetic average of the grades obtained in the two mini-tests during Continuous Assessment by the following expression:

EN = PA1 x CAD1 + PA1 x CAD2

CAD1 – classification of the 1st mini-test to be performed during a lecture;
CAD2 – classification of the 2nd mini-test to be performed during a lecture;
These are associated with the following weights:
PA1 = 50%

Classification of the Re-sitting Season (ER):

The Re-sitting classification (ER) shall be the score obtained in the Re-sitting Season (CER) according to the calculation formula:

ER = PA2 x CER

CER– classification of the Re-sitting examination, rounded to units.
This is associated to the following weight:
PA2 = 100%

A Pass corresponds to a minimum final mark of 10 out of 20 (paragraph 1, Article 4 of the General Evaluation Rules in FEUP).

Evaluation o students that, under paragraph 3 of Article 4 of the General Evaluation Rules, are dismissed from frequency will have to do the final exam in one of the examination periods (regular or re-sit periods) indicated in Article 6 of the General Evaluation Rules.

The final classification will be given according to the criteria described in “Final classification”.

Classification improvement

Students who which to improve their mark in the final Exam must have obtained a pass and be  duly registered in the General Secretariat Undergraduate, FEUP.

Improving Classification is only possible in the Final Exam period, through the completion of a closed-book, single written test about all issues taught at the UC,  lasting up to 120 min. The classification, based on a  0-20 scale is rounded to the unit.

The Final Mark (CF) will be the highest of the marks obtained in the previous Continuous Assessment where approval was obtained and the grade obtained in this improvement exam.
