Objectives

The objectives of this course are: a) to present the concepts, services and their multimedia and hypermedia applications; b) to present coding techniques and representation of multimedia information; c) to introduce application development tools; d) to develop applications. 

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the course the students will be able to: - Identify the distinct technologies required for an multimedia application or service; - To know the reality, the requirements and constraints of different technologies involved; - Designing a multimedia application or service taking into account technological limitations; - Develop an application or service using multimedia authoring software Adobe Flash.

1. Introduction to multimedia: definition, types of media, levels of information, basic technologies. 2. Multimedia applications: classification, some examples. 3. Coding and representation of multimedia information: information theory and compression techniques, image compression, video compression, audio compression 4. User interfaces: usability, design, evaluation. 5. Network requirements of multimedia applications: performance parameters, requirements of various media. 6. Networks and multimedia application: architectures and protocols, distributed systems, QoS (Quality of Service) on ATM and on the Internet, models and applications. 7. New services: interactive digital television; multimedia streaming, IPtel

Teaching methods and learning activities

Presentation of the program; practical classes which introduce the tools; homework and development of an application; public presentation of the assignments.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Student workers, although exempt from classes, must perform the same practical works as other students. They must also submit them to evaluation, as well as defend them on the dates that are set globally.

Classification improvement

Improvement of the exam grade is possible according to the rules in FEUP. Improvment of practical works is still possible at the end of this course occurrence.
