Objectives

The main objective of this discipline is to put students in contact with manufacturing processes, mechanical characterization and application of composite laminates.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is expected that students study a particular problem involving composite laminates by means of manufacturing components (specimens, plates or structural details) in order to perform mechanical characterization and/or structural applicability. By the end it is expected that students are able to understand the mechanical behavior of laminates, the methods adequate for its characterization and the specificities inherent to design with these materials.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

The students mus have some previous knowledge about mechanical behaviour of composites.

Program

The proposed work will be ralted with one of the following topics:

Layer constitutive laws

Classical laminate theory

Layer fracture criteria

Aplication of fracture mechanics to composites laminates

Numerical metjops applied to interlaminar fracture

Mechanical testing of laminates

Connection between composite materials

Mandatory literature

Marcelo F. S. F. de Moura, Alfredo B. de Morais, António G. de Magalhães; Materiais compósitos. ISBN: 972-8953-00-3

Teaching methods and learning activities

The students must perform a pre-establised numerical or experimental work (or both). By the ned they must write a report that will be discussed with the teachers.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation without final exam
