Objectives

1. Background This course is justified after the students acquired basic knowledge in the various types of materials for mechanical engineering applications, because they are going to have a deeper knowledge about these materials. 2. Specific Aims Acquiring specific and technical knowledge about ceramic materials, polymers and polymeric matrix composites, to allow optimised selection of these materials. With this knowledge the students are able to select the most adequate materials for different mechanical projects that they are going to do in other units. 3. Previous Knowledge Generic knowledge about all types of materials (Materials Science and Engineering), namely; chemical bonding (Materials Science and Engineering), equilibrium diagrams (Mechanical Metallurgy), basic characteristics, mechanical tests and properties and materialography (Materials I and Mechanical Metallurgy). 4. Percentual Distribution Scientific component – 50% Technological component – 50% 5.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the semester the students should have acquired basic and advanced engineering knowledge about ceramics, polymers and polymers matrix composites, namely: - Knowledge about the different ceramics, polymers and composites, used in the different brands of engineering, main applications and properties; - Be able to understand the mechanical, optical, thermal and electrical properties of these materials; - Be able to select the most suitable materials considering the desired application; - Capacity to perform different types of experimental work to collect data, interpretation and relations with the learned subjects. Perform small experimental projects using the learned materials, namely materials selection and production processes; - Capacities to collect and organize scientific information, using books, scientific papers, internet, databases, technical visits or interviews, elaboration of technical reports, posters and public oral discussions and presentations; - Capacity to do practical team works, presentation and discussion of the results obtained.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Classes are teached in the materialography and heat treatment laboratories, where after a short presentation of the subjects, the students use the available equipments to solve the presented problems. These classes are intended to promote a contact of the students with the selection process of ceramic and polymeric materials. In the classes of ceramic materials the students have to elaborate reports about simple experimental works of identification and processing ceramic materials. In the polymers part, the students have to identify different sets of polymeric materials, see some videos about transformation processes and visit one or two companies that work with polymeric materials. Some practical work is done regarding injection moulding and the characterization of the mechanical behaviour of the injected products.
