Teaching language

Suitable for English-speaking students

Objectives

Provide the students with competences necessary for their rationalizing and designing systems of biological transformation of energy, and of utilization and upgrade of aquatic biological resources

Learning outcomes and competences

The learning outcomes (understanding and design of bioenergy and valorization of bioaquatic resources) are included in items 1 and 2 of the syllabus. This curricular unit (CU) provides the foundational elements of the utilization of biological resources for the production of utilities (e.g. energy) and products (e.g. high added-value chemicals), within an environment-friendly framework (e.g. sustained usage and remediation). Taking advantage of the knowledge and skills acquired in the first study cycle, a comprehensive and consistent set of concepts is provided, as well as common tools for applications involving extracting, processing and conveying information in multiple scenarios. This CU addresses basic concepts to rationalize the major existing and emerging technologies, thus backing up discussion of data and analytical processing of information for an efficient use thereof.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Teaching methods and learning activities

Teaching of this CU will depart from generic conceptual lecturing by the instructor, complemented by external guests – with an emphasis on a global picture with technico-scientiic framework and socio-economic relevance, and highlighting bioprocess specificities; such delivery will be gradually reinforced with techniques of active and collaborative learning by the students, demanding their direct involvement (on individual and group bases) in search of information and structured discussion of case studies. Evaluation will thus have a continuous and distributed nature, complemented with a final exam for referencing of the learning quality to the whole of the class.
