Objectives

In this course the student should perform individual research and development work conducting to the elaboration of a scientific dissertation on a topic in the field of Biomedical Engineering. Based on the knowledge of the state of the art, obtained in previous courses, the student must select and develop appropriate methodologies for solving the proposed problems, and get results that must be critically analyzed for drawing conclusions for improving the knowledge in the dissertation topic.

Learning outcomes and competences

 

The student must acquire skills in conducting independent research and development work, and demonstrate creativity and innovation abilities for the implementation of new methodologies or for the adaptation of others already known to new problems. They Should also develop synthesis and critical evaluation skills for the preparation of a dissertation that reports clearly the work done and its main achievements.

All the work is done in close collaboration with the supervisor of the dissertation.

This course is not subjected to a common program to be met by all students. Instead, each student will have an individual work program, defined together with the supervisor.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Each student shall conduct individual work involving the analysis of the problem to solve, formulation of the solution, analysis of results and conclusions. The work will be supervised by the advisor and culminates with the delivery of a draft version of the text of the dissertation.

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation of work developed in the framework of the dissertation is held in a public session, by a jury consisting of the supervisor (or co-supervisor if he exists), a member external to FEUP, the director of the study cycle or a member of the scientific committee. One or two experts on the subject of the dissertation can also participate in the panel. The public session includes an initial presentation of the work done by the student, followed by a discussion period. The final grade is decided by the jury taking into account the quality of the work, the autonomy of the student during the execution, the text of the dissertation produced and the answers provided by student during the discussion.
