Objectives

This course deals with the fundamental principles of chemistry and shows its importance in our everyday life. It is important not only for ordinary tasks, but also for big factories. In a first stage, it will be given a macroscopic overview on the chemical phenomena. It will be followed by references to electronic structure and chemical connection. Subsequently, concepts related with intermolecular interactions and the way they influence the level organized matter will be presented.
Students will be aware of the importance of bibliography, functional research and how to quote adequately.
All concepts will be exemplified by real examples, as far as the different aspects of environmental impact of chemical processes, production and storage of energy (energies and fuel cells), emerging technologies (photovoltaic and solar), new materials (biomaterials) and nanotechnologies are concerned.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical-practical classes will be based on numerical application and group assignments (2,5 hours a week). There will also be tutorial classes in groups, which will last 1 hour per week.
Themes of the course will be explained, whenever possible, by laboratory assignments, which will take place at the chemistry labs (4 or 5 sessions of 3 hours each).

Eligibility for exams

Students will be admitted to exams if they attend to all of the exams and if they do all the assignments. However, they have to reach a minimum average grade of 10 out of 20 in all of these components of assessment. See general information of the course for detailed information about assessment.

Calculation formula of final grade

Students will be assessed as follows:
15%- weekly homework
15%- each of the three tests
20%- laboratory assignments
20%- final exam

Students can only complete the course, if they achieve a minimum grade of 10 out of 20.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

By appropriate examination, based on the written exam at the appropriate season of exams. Working students may request an evaluation scheme based on a practical exam and a final written exam. This situation should be applied for at the Professor in charge until the end of October, even for students who already have the laboratory component. The practical examination will consist of a laboratory evaluation with 3 hours duration in pattern and time to be arranged with the teacher. It will focus randomly on one or more of the experimental works of the academic year and necessarily involves experimental manipulation, preparation and reporting, besides other means of assessment which may be deemed necessary. The written examination for a maximum of 2.5 hours will be held during the examination period January - February 2010, the same date as other students. The matter of the written examination focuses in detail on all matters included in the current program for the course, including written questions on the laboratory component.
Students can only complete the course, if they achieve a minimum grade of 10 out of 20.

Classification improvement

It is not possible to remake individual components of distributed evaluation given their cooperative nature in some cases and extent. In the case of the laboratory evaluation the process takes place in group and is cooperative.
Remake of the final exam possible in accordance with the rules of FEUP. The mark only affects this component in the proportion as it is assigned.
