Objectives

Presentation and study of site investigation and characterization mechanical and geophysical tests/methods and procedures in a geotechnical and geo-environmental perspective.

Learning outcomes and competences

Capability of understanding and evaluating  site investigation and characterization studies as well as programming a site investigation and characterization study based on the available information.

Working method

Presencial

Program

General introduction to the subject. Review and introduction to geotechnical / geophysical concepts considered relevant within the discipline. Geotechnical aspects of geo-systems, namely related to: in-situ and laboratory soil and rock investigation / characterization. Some of the topics to be addressed: Phases and schedule of a study, sampling of solids, liquids and gases, mechanical and geophysical methods for the investigation and characterization, predominantly in-situ, of soil and rock masses in a  geotechnical / geoenvironmental perspective: equipment, field procedures; sampling, analysis and interpretation of data. Case studies.

Mandatory literature

Edited by Peter K. Robertson, Paul W. Mayne; Geotechnical site characterization. ISBN: 90-5410-940-8(vol. 1)
ASTM; ASTM D5730 - 04 - D5730-04 Standard Guide for Site Characterization for Environmental Purposes With Emphasis on Soil, Rock, the Vadose Zone and Groundwater

Complementary Bibliography
