This course aims to develop students’ contact with subject matters related to mine exploration. It is mainly focused on the methodologies of exploration of opencast mineral resources, being all the elementary operations of this extractive activity comprehensively analysed. Particular emphasis is given to the exploitation and processing of Ornamental Rock.
This course unit also aims to endow students with skills (and attitudes) which make them able to design an exploration system of rock masses or coordinate in an optimized way an exploration unit.
Introduction: Overview: concepts of ore and mineral; concept of mineral deposit and mineral field; stages of valorisation of a mineral field; mine work and mine machines; physical e technical properties of rocks; mine operations. Rock masses properties: Diverse anisotropies. Statistical analysis by stereographic analysis. Rock properties: characterization tests to several purposes Industrial explosives: characteristics of explosives; types of explosives and domain of application; criteria of explosives exchange; loading and detonation; handling; storage and transportation of explosives. Opencast ore extraction: parameters and capacity of production of opencast exploration; concept of optimization of a chain of operations; optimization of costs and optimization of investment; Mechanical ore extraction: types of equipments; characterization and domain of application; extraction of ornamental rocks; ore extraction organization. Explosives ore extraction: study of drilling; selection of drilling equipment; fire diagrams; pre-cut and smooth-blasting; ore extraction in urban environments; ore extraction organization. Regulations Hygiene and safety Landscape recovery
The classes are entirely theoretical-practical, comprising a component of field classes (direct contact with industrial units of ore extraction and rock transformation), which will include a significant workload.

Students have to attend at least 75% of the classes.
The distributed evaluation will be made by the preparation and presentation of 2 monographs .
In each of the monographs Students must produce a written report and conduct an oral presentation, which will be evaluated products.
Students who obtain 10 or more values of average grade of the two monographs, are approved for UC.
The remaining students are left with the opportunity to conduct a written examination in Period of Appeal.
According to General Evaluation Rules of FEUP.
In the Exam in the Period of Appeal.
