Objectives
Objectives: To enable the students to develop and implement complex electronic systems based on off-the-shelf components and standard communication and testing technologies.
Non-technical skills: Teamwork; Communication; Fluency in English.
Non-technical learning outcomes: The students shall be able to collaborate in the development of technical projects and in the production of the corresponding technical reports written in English.
Technical skills: Conceiving and engineering systems; Designing; Implementing.
Technical learning outcomes envisaged for part 1: At the end of this part the students shall be able to: a) Describe the internal architecture and memory organization of the 8051 8-bit microcontrollers; b) List and explain instructions and addressing modes; c) Write small / medium complexity programs in assembly; d) Develop and experiment with a small system based on the 8051 microcontroller. Technical learning outcomes envisaged for part 2: At the end of this part the students shall be able to: a) Describe the I2C bus protocol and its operation in practice; b) Explain the operation of selected I2C devices, e.g. real-time clocks, I/O expanders; c) Design a small I2C system; d) Implement and experiment with an 8051 / I2C small system. Technical learning outcomes envisaged for part 3: At the end of this part the students shall be able to: a) Describe the IEEE 1149.1 test bus protocol and its operation in practice; b) Explain how to detect structural faults (shorts and opens) at printed circuit level; c) Implement and experiment with an 8051-based small test bus controller.

Teaching methods and learning activities
This course will use active and collaborative learning techniques: a) The students will be involved in the preparation, delivery and assessment of theoretical lectures; b) Reports from lab assignments will be peer-reviewed.
All pedagogical contents and activities will be made available through our Moodle e-learning server. Emphasis will be placed on hands-on lab activities: 9 out of 13 sessions will take place at the lab.
