Objectives

Integration of knowledge and skills acquired in order to carry out an assignment/project about a specific theme in the area of knowledge of this Integrated Master, which culminates in the presentation and defence of a scientific research thesis that can be developed: (i) in an enterprise environment: execution of a research/development/innovation thesis at a company (in Portugal or abroad); (ii) in an academic environment: execution of a research thesis either on a mobility program (ERASMUS, MOBILE or equivalent, ex: agreement between University of Porto and University of Maryland Baltimore County) or at R&D laboratory of the Department of Chemical Engineering.

This course unit aims at offering students a diversity of options and experiences by creating three types of project: 1. Execution of a project in an enterprise environment 2. Execution of a project at a foreign institution 3. Execution of a project in an academic environment Professors and companies propose annual projects to be develop individually offering the necessary means to carry them out. In the case of the execution of a project at a foreign institution, the themes have to be agreed with the ERASMUS coordinators (or equivalent) at the host institution. Students will have at least one academic supervisor (at FEUP or at the host university/company) or an external supervisor (at the company). Teaching methods and learning activities

This project is an individual research/development work which may involve experimental and/or simulation methods and that promote students’ initiative, decision-making skills, creative and critical thinking. This project should also promote the analysis of new situations, the gathering of relevant information, the development of approach methodologies, the design of resolution instruments to solve problems, problem resolution, summary and conclusions. It should culminate with the execution of a relevant and original dissertation, specifically developed for this purpose, as well as its public presentation and discussion of the results obtained (defence).
