Objectives

To efficiently acquire advanced engineering knowledge in the operation and design of processes and technologies of treatment of gaseous and liquid effluents and solid waste.
To develop students’ reasoning and problem solving skills regarding the operation and design of pollution control systems.

Program

1. Introduction – Energy and Environment (overview)
2. GASEOUS EMISSIONS (2 weeks)
2.1 Fundamentals of atmospheric pollution
Pollutants, sources, air quality, regulations
2.2 Impacts of atmospheric pollution
Types of impacts, carcinogenic substances in inhalable atmospheric substances, ozone and aggravation of children’s asthma, global impacts, climate changes
2.3 Treatment technologies
Strategies, control processes, control of particles emission and gaseous pollutants.
3. Solid waste
3.1 Fundamentals of solid waste
Types, sources and characteristics; regulation
3.2 Solid waste management
Amount of solid waste produced in Europe and in Portugal, management hierarchy, resources and energy recovery, treatment and deposition systems
3.3 Waste recycling
Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by waste recycling
4. WATER AND WASTEWATER – PHYSICO-CHEMICAL TREATMENT (6 weeks)
4.1 Fundamentals of water chemistry
Water properties; acidity, alkalinity and carbon dioxide in water; calcium and other metals in water: complexation and redox processes
4.2 Water quality, chemical and microbiological characteristics
Water quality (quality indicators, quality criteria and standards for the different uses of water, Portuguese and European Union regulations); qualitative and quantitative characterization of domestic and industrial wastewater
4.3 Technologies of physico-chemical treatments in wastewater
Flow equalization and concentration homogenization; neutralization; sedimentation; flotation; chemical coagulation/flocculation; heavy metal removal.
5. WASTEWATER–BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES (6 weeks)
5.1 Aerobic, anaerobic and anoxic processes
5.2 Biodegradation of organic matter in nutrients (N, P, S)
5.2 Suspended biomass technologies and fixed biomass technologies

Teaching methods and learning activities

a) General theoretical-practical classes will be based on the presentation of the themes of the course unit, along with the discussion of practical examples and/or resolution of problems;
b) Laboratory classes on themes of this course unit and on Integrated Project in Biological Engineering.

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Eligibility for exams

Students have to attend classes in accordance with the General Evaluation Rules of FEUP.

Calculation formula of final grade

a) Continuous Assessment (40%)
b) Final Exam (60%)
To complete this course unit, students have to reach a minimum grade of 8 in the final exam and minimum average grade of 10 out of 20.
