Objectives
This course aims to endow students with knowledge about the most important relationships between the mechanical, electrical, magnetic and chemical properties with the structure. Characterization of different types of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, biomaterials), their properties, processing and scope in the area of process engineering. It is given a particular emphasis on evaluation of the efforts on equipment and structures, some clear examples are presented. The issues of economic and environmental nature are being considered in the selection and design of materials. Students will develop their skills in literature, knowledge of English (the bulk of the support material is in English school) and be aware of some software applications in order to carry out the prediction of material properties. Writing and oral communication skills will be developed through the resolution and discussion of problems of a general nature.
Program
Introduction to Science and Engineering. Atomic structure and interatomic bonding. The structure of crystalline solids. Imperfection in solids. Diffusion. Mechanical properties. Efforts on structures in static equilibrium. Tests for determining the mechanical properties of materials. Design of standard equipment in chemical engineering projects. Correlation of structure with mechanical properties. Dislocations and strengthening mechanisms. Failure. Phase diagrams. Phase transformations and alteration of mechanical properties. Metals, polymers, ceramics and composites: characteristics, applications and processing. Electrical, thermal, optical and magnetic properties of materials and its correlation with the structure. Changes of material properties by means of thermal or mechanical action. Analysis of changes in the solid state in materials during processing. Corrosion and protection processes with a view to durability of materials. Economic, environmental and social materials.
