Objectives
The main objectives of this course are: i) to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge about atmospheric pollution, air quality management and control of atmospheric emissions, namely on gas-solid separation; ii) to stimulate student participation through the contact with National and European problems. It is a priority to call the students’ attention to real industrial situations and how to solve them.

Air Quality Management (AQM)
Atmospheric pollution: past, present and future.
Pollutant classification, units for expressing concentrations.
Global impacts of atmospheric pollution: climate change, depletion of stratospheric ozone, acid deposition and radiations.
Strategies for air quality managing. Air quality monitoring: monitoring networks. European Union and Portuguese legislations.
Atmospheric pollutants: characteristics, emission sources, control, impacts and guidelines (suspended particles, sulphur compounds, carbon monoxide, nitrogen compounds, volatile organic compounds, tropospheric ozone, noise, other atmospheric pollutants).
Evolution of atmospheric pollutant concentrations in the North of Portugal.
Control of Atmospheric Emissions (CAE)
Strategy on attack to an emission air pollution problem. Control processes.
Introduction to air pollution control devices.
Control devices for gaseous contaminants.
Control devices for particulate contaminants.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Presentation and discussion of the different subjects, case studies, group works on air quality management (in the Oporto Metropolitan Area and in the North of Portugal), and on emission control.
Lectures supported by audiovisual media.

Eligibility for exams
To be approved through distributed evaluation the students must obey the following criteria:
i) Attendance to classes according to FEUP norms;
ii) Minimum mark of 8 (in 20) for AQM and CAE;
iii) A minimum mark of distributed evaluation equal to 10 (in 20).
Students that are not approved through distributed evaluation need to make an exam to be possible to be approved.
Calculation formula of final grade
The mark of distributed evaluation (CAD) is based on the marks of Air Quality Management (AQM) and of Control of Atmospheric Emissions (CAE):
- CAD: 0.2 x group work (1) + 0.4 x group work (2) + 0,4 x written test
written test: Minimum mark of 8 (in 20)
- CAE: group work
Final mark = 0,5 x CAD + 0,5 x CAE
